Pilot's 1986 death deserves inquiry, says dad

The Brisbane father of an Air Force pilot killed 20 years ago tomorrow has called on the Federal Government to establish a new inquiry so the truth about his son's death can finally be revealed.

Twenty-two-year-old Craig Mackelmann died when his Mirage jet fighter crashed into the sea during a live fire training exercise near the Williamtown RAAF base in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Grahame Mackelmann says official inquiries have failed to adequately explain the 1986 accident and believes authorities are still hiding the truth.

"The dishonesty being displayed is unacceptable to the people of this nation," he said.

"This family has been continually subjected to this treatment of lies and deceit for almost 20 years and it's time for it to stop."

Mr Mackelmann says he has written to the Prime Minister to request a further investigation but has received no reply.
