REFILING: Suspect in Shiga Pref. child slayings to get psychiatric test+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)OTSU, Japan, Feb. 21_(Kyodo) _ Prosecutors plan to conduct a psychiatric test on a female suspect who allegedly stabbed two kindergarteners to death last Friday, after investigators found that she has been emotionally unstable and acting violently at home, investigative sources said Tuesday.



The Otsu district public prosecutors believe that the suspect, 34-year-old Zheng Yongshan, can still be held criminally responsible as she gave detailed descriptions of the stabbing and said she tried to flee.

Zheng, a Chinese national, has told investigators she killed the two 5-year-olds -- her daughter's classmates at a kindergarten in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture -- because she believed her daughter was alienated by other children.



But teachers at the kindergarten said that Zheng's five-year-old daughter was not bullied and got along well with her peers. The prosecutors believe that Zheng either overreacted or was deluded in thinking that other children were being unfriendly to her daughter.

Zheng arrived in Japan in August 1999 and married her Japanese husband, whom she had met in China, in July the following year. She is known in the community by her Japanese name Mie Taniguchi.

Since 2003, she has been emotionally unstable and has sometimes acted violently at home, according to relatives and investigation sources. She had received treatment at a hospital but stopped going last October even though the doctor had told her to get checkups every two weeks, they said.

Zheng was arrested on charges of fatally stabbing the two children as she was driving them to the kindergarten together with her daughter.
